Surface Engineering Database

This database of Surface Engineering processes is designed as a reference of all the available solid engineering data required for making engineering decisions on the use of hazmat alternatives.

This information is password protected.

There are a vast number of coatings and surface treatments available commercially with more being developed all the time.  In general, however, there is very little performance data available on most of them.  Much of the data that does exist is proprietary, difficult to access, or has not been taken in a manner consistent with the requirements of users in the aerospace and defense industries.  Where extensive data exist and are available, they are provided as downloadable Excel files and reports.  Where data are very limited or unreliable, such data as is available will be provided, with caveats included.  Information is included on both general surface treatment processes and materials and on specific commercial treatments.

This database will grow as we pull together the available engineering data.

Surface Engineering Data and Reports:  Most of this data comes from DoD programs and includes corrosion, wear, fatigue, embrittlement, impact, rig tests and service evaluations.

  • Hard chrome alternatives – most of this data is from the SERDP and ESTCP-funded Hard Chrome Alternatives Team (HCAT)

    • Thermal spray (HVOF and plasma spray)

    • Nanophase Co-P electroplate

    • Trivalent chrome electroplate (not yet available)

    • Electrospark Alloying (microweld facing)

  • Cadmium Alternatives – from a variety of sources, including the ESTCP-funded Joint Cadmium Alternatives Team (JCAT)

    • Cd alternatives for low strength steel (Zn-Ni, AlumiPlate, etc.)

    • Cd alternatives for low strength steel (not yet available)

    • Electrolytic Aluminum (AlumiPlate™)

    • Ultrahigh strength stainless steel, Ferrium® S53 (not yet available)

    • Zn- and Al-filled polymer and ceramic coatings (often used on fasteners)

    • Metallic ceramics (often known as SermeTels®)

  • Aluminum pretreatments (chromate conversion alternatives) – from ESTCP-funded work at NAVAIR

  • Anodizing alternatives – various sources

    • Thin film sulfuric and boric sulfuric acid anodizing

    • Keronite (high voltage aqueous treatment for Al)

    • Tagnite(high voltage aqueous treatment for Mg)

  • Chrome-free primers – various sources

 Coatings Database

This is a database of basic engineering properties for a growing list of coatings.  This is the place to go to find information on a specific coating or trade name.  It can be searched by vendor, coating name, type of coating, application, and any other field in the database.  Data in this database is cross-referenced to the Surface Engineering Data where it is available.  Since there are many thousands of coatings and surface treatments on the market, this database will grow to meet user needs. It currently contains coatings of interest to the aerospace industry.
