Meeting the European ELV, WEEE, RoHS, and other international rules

These rules, which come into effect July 1, 2006, affect what you can put on your products, but do not cover worker exposure in the manufacture.  These rules affect you, even if you do not sell into Europe, if your customers incorporate your products into products they sell there.  You will already be aware of this if you have received begun receiving letters from customers asking if your products are RoHS-compliant.

Although these rules are European, they are being adopted in different forms elsewhere in the world, and in an increasingly global business environment you cannot afford to have different products for different markets.

ELV, WEEE and RoHS severely restrict the use on vehicles and electronic and electrical equipment (which is almost everything these days) of most materials and coating that contain (for details see European regulations):

  1. Cadmium

  2. Cr6+

  3. Mercury

  4. Lead

  5. Brominated fire retardants (polybrominated biphenyls (PBBs) and polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs)) used in plastics such as circuit boards

This web site is designed to provide you with a wealth of information on the alternatives to these materials, concentrating primarily on the coatings and surface finishing.  However, many companies will find themselves with complex or unique problems that have no obvious, easy answer.  We can assess your potential exposure and help you make the best decision on whether your products, or the products from your suppliers, will meet the rules, and if not how you can change them.
